MCC Baseball takes all four games at Trinidad

TRINIDAD, Colo. – The McCook Community College baseball team completed a four-game series sweep Sunday taking a doubleheader from Trinidad State 5-4 and 11-0.

Sophomore Blake Dale broke up a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning of Game 1 with an RBI double as Jereniel Herrera pitched seven strong innings with sophomore Ethan Badcock picking up the save.

“Game 1 was a really good win for us,” said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. “It’s a game you’ve got to find a way to win if you want to play well late in the year.”

Freshman Cory Wouters tossed his best game of the season in Game 2 with a seven-inning shutout, striking out 11 hitters. Sophomore Will Edwards had four hits in the game.

“It was just we got a great start from Cory and we let our offense work, played clean and if we do that we’ll be pretty good,” said Olsen.

MCC improves to 12-4 in the Empire League (Region IX) and 20-17 overall.

Trinidad State falls to 4-12 and 12-29 overall.

The Indians are home for five games this week starting with a 2 p.m. game Tuesday against Colby Community College (6-35). This weekend, MCC hosts Luna Community College in a four-game series with doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday starting both days at 1 p.m.

 

GAME 1 – McCook CC 5, Trinidad State 4: Sophomore Blake Dale (Riverton, Wyo.) started a two-out rally in the second and scored the game’s first run on an RBI-single from Will Edwards (Sydney, Australia). The Trojans tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run.

MCC went up 2-1 in the third on a walk by Nathan Hutchison (Riverton, Wyo.), and a Trinidad error. The Trojans tied the game 2-2 with a run in the fourth.

Sophomore Jackson Yeager (Omaha Westside HS) doubled to lead off the MCC sixth and scored on a Blake single and the Indians took a 4-2 lead on a Trinidad error. TSJC tied the game 4-4 in the seventh with a two-run home run.

“We almost got it in the bag in the seventh, but they made a good swing,” said Olsen.

With one out in the eighth inning, freshman Maddox Shaver (Belleville Ontario) doubled and Dale delivered what proved to be the game winner with his RBI-double to left field.

“We did a good job of answering in the eighth and Dale had another huge swing to put us in top,” said Olsen and then Badcock threw a good inning with Dale making a great diving out for the first out of the inning.”

Sophomore Jereniel Herrera (Panama City, Panama) pitched seven innings to pick up the win, he allowed six hits and four earned runs with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Ethan Badcock (sophomore, Adelaide, Australia) picked up the one-inning save allowing one hit and striking out one.

Dale paced the nine-hit MCC offense with three hits and two RBIs. Edwards drove in two runs on his two hits.

 

GAME 2 – McCook CC 11, Trinidad State 0: The Indians broke on top 2-0 as Will Edwards doubled to lead off the second, scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Blake Dale. Sophomore Jake Quinlivan (Sydney, Australia) singled in Maddox Shaver for the second run. Edwards doubled in a run in the third to put MCC up 3-0.

MCC went up 8-0 with a five-run fourth inning with a two-run single by Michael Quick, a two-run double by Jackson Yeager and an RBI-single from Edwards.

Without the benefit of a hit, the Indians scored three runs in the seventh inning on five walks and an error.

Cory Wouters (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), allowed five hits – all singles – while walking two and fanning 11 in his seven innings.
