YMCA of McCook to Host Capital Improvement Project Open House
McCook, Nebraska, August 16, 2024 – The YMCA of McCook is excited to host an open house on Sunday, August 18 from 4-7p.m. at 901 West E Street. The event is open to the public and will allow guests to tour the current facility and learn about the future vision of the YMCA.
An aging facility with substantial deferred maintenance led YMCA of McCook leadership to initiate a comprehensive investigation into its current space in early 2021. After a thorough Building Analysis and Visioning Study that identified several deficiencies in the building’s mechanical systems, the organization made the decision to conduct a Feasibility Study in 2022 to test the community’s level of interest for an improvement project. With overwhelming support identified through the Feasibility Study, the organization elected to embark on a $16 Million Capital Campaign. To date, $15 Million has been pledged to the project since fundraising began in April of 2023. With over 90% of the funds raised, the YMCA is seeking public support to meet its project goal. Thanks to generous support from the Graff Charitable Foundation and Community Hospital, funds raised during the community phase of the campaign are being matched dollar for dollar, up to $750,000.
The following revitalized features will highlight the capital improvement project: expanded gymnasium with elevated walking track, renovated indoor aquatic center, modernized fitness/wellness center, new youth development center and outdoor playground, dedicated social spaces for youth, families and community groups. Construction on the project will commence once the fundraising goal has been met and is expected to take 18-20 months.
The YMCA of McCook has been serving Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas since 1926 in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. The OUR TOWN, OUR Y, OUR FUTURE campaign will create a modern, vibrant gathering place for all. The renovated YMCA will provide increased opportunities for wellness, recreation and community connection.
