Troopers Encourage Safe Driving as Summer Travel Revs Up

Nebraska State Patrol

May 22, 2026 (Lincoln, Neb.)  — Summer travel kicks into high gear this weekend and Nebraska State Troopers encourage safe driving all season long.

“Road trips, getaways, family vacations, and more are on the schedule this summer,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As summer travel kicks off this Memorial Day weekend, our troopers will be on patrol across the state to keep roadways safe from dangerous driving behavior. No matter how far your summer travel takes you, make the commitment now to drive safely. Our troopers have numerous partners on the mission to keep Nebraska roadways safe, and every driver is part of that team. Let’s work together to make this summer safe across The Good Life.”

Memorial Day weekend starts the summer travel season, and roadways will be busy across the state and entire country. The weekend is also part of the annual Make It Click campaign.

During the first week of the Make It Click effort, troopers arrested 25 drivers for driving under the influence. Troopers also issued citations for open alcohol container (22), driving under suspension (25), no seat belt (29), improper child restraint (8), speeding (594), and failure to move over (3). Troopers also performed 260 motorist assists in the last week.

The Make It Click campaign is a nationwide effort, made possible in Nebraska through grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.
