Second-half push leads Golden Eagles past MCC women

MCC Basketball Womens
CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Laramie County Community college women’s basketball team responded from a 19-point first-half deficit Friday to pick up their first home win of the year – a 65-54 win over McCook Community College.

MCC led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter, extended the lead to 19 points three minutes into the second quarter, and held on for a 34-29 edge at halftime.

“We started the game really well, we executed offensively and we defended at a high level,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “Then we just got comfortable and didn't compete like every possession mattered.”

The Golden Eagles outscored MCC 36-20 in the second half.

“We made some big plays but also did a lot of dumb things at the same time,” said Pritchett.

Laramie County shot 32.2 percent from the field, made six of 26 shots from the arc, and made 21 of 24 free throws (87.5 percent). LCCC had a 36-30 edge in rebounding (including 16 in their offensive end), turned the ball over 17 times and came up with 11 steals.

The Lady Indians shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half, 36.6 in the final 20 minutes and 44.2 for the game. MCC made four of 10 triples and went 12 of 15 from the line (80 percent) but committed 24 turnovers.

“That many turnovers and giving up 18 offensive rebounds is not going to win many games,” said Pritchett.

Sophomore Claudia Serrador Cortazar (Trapagaran, Spain) led MCC posting a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Anastasia Labelle-Piskor (Saint Amand Les Easux, France) also scored 10 points.

Nevaeh Lucero (sophomore, Thornton, Colo.) chipped in eight points. sophomore Miah Wren (Rangely, Colo.) scored eight points off the bench. Sophomore Mar Molina Munoz (Parets del Valles, Spain) led MCC with five assists to go along with six points. Iraia Aduriz Marquez (freshman, Barcelona, Spain) had five rebounds and six points.

LCCC evens its record at 2-2.

MCC goes to 1-2 and will continue the Wyoming weekend road trip in Torrington, Saturday for a 3 p.m. game against Eastern Wyoming.

“We have to correct things quickly and get our heads on right as we play tomorrow against a tough EWC team that shoots the ball well,” said Pritchett.
