NCTA Students Show Up for Curtis Fall Festival
Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture students were out in force this past weekend as Curtis celebrated its annual Fall Festival, taking part in the parade, helping with children’s activities and volunteering behind the scenes.
NCTA was represented throughout the Fall Festival parade with the college’s main float and entries from Women in Agriculture, Ag Mechanics, the Ranch Horse Team and the Student Veterinary Medical Association (STVMA).
Beyond the parade route, many NCTA students volunteered their time to help set up activities and work shifts taking tickets and helping with children’s games throughout Saturday.
Their help made a real difference for Fall Festival organizers.
“We were absolutely packed,” said Doris Burke, a member of the Curtis Chamber of Commerce and Fall Festival Committee who also helps coordinate volunteers. “We are truly blessed that the kids came and helped set up and run activities. There is no way we could have done what we did on Saturday without their help.”
For NCTA, participating in Fall Festival is more than having a presence in the parade. It is an opportunity for students and employees to have fun, support Curtis and be active members of the community they call home while attending college.
That connection between NCTA and Curtis is also something students learn about in the classroom. In NCTA’s first-year Foundations course, students discuss civic engagement and the important role individuals and organizations play in keeping rural communities strong.
Students are encouraged to look beyond campus and find ways to become involved, whether that means volunteering at a community event, joining an organization, helping a neighbor or simply showing up when their community needs people to lend a hand.
For small rural communities, participation matters. Fall Festival provided a great example of that lesson in action, with NCTA students volunteering not because it was an assignment, but because they wanted to have fun, support their organizations and be part of the Curtis community.
