Most 17-Year-Olds Now Eligible to Register to Vote
Grand Island, Nebr.-Along with the new year comes the opportunity for most 17-year-old Nebraskans to register to vote.
“Nebraska law allows a 17-year-old citizen who will turn 18 by November 4 of this year to register now and vote in local elections,” said Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet. “It’s a powerful way for teens to speak to their government and impact decisions where they live.”
While there are no statewide elections scheduled in 2025, there are several special school bond elections already scheduled in various Nebraska communities, plus municipal elections being held in Lincoln and Omaha this spring.
“Registering to vote is quick and easy,” Overstreet said. Getting registered not only allows a citizen to vote, but also to participate in the petition process, which can implement new laws or repeal existing ones.
Voters may register in person at their local election commission office or county clerk’s office by providing their name, address, date of birth and signature. Voters will also need to select a political party to complete the registration. A Nebraska driver’s license or state ID number, last four digits of the Social Security number and contact information may also be provided.
Voters preferring to register online may do so through the secure portal at ne.gov/go/NEReg2Vote. The site requires a Nebraska driver’s license or state identification number be entered along with the voter’s name, address and party affiliation.
Voter registrations may also be mailed to county election offices or the county clerk and must be accompanied by a copy of a current valid ID. Voters may also register at the Department of Motor Vehicles while getting a driver’s license or at the Department of Health and Human Services or State Department of Education in relation to public assistance programs.
