McCook City Continues Burn Ban
On March 25, 2026, Governor Pillen extended Executive Order No. 26-08 which extends the burn ban in Nebraska until 11:59 p.m. on April 10, 2026, for the entire State of Nebraska. In part, the Executive Order states that a continuing period of dry weather statewide in conjunction with moderate to extreme drought conditions is endangering the health and safety of a significant number of Nebraska citizens as well as public and private property. The continuing period of dry weather, high winds, and drought conditions have combined to create a dangerous environment resulting in an elevated wildfire risk which may create problems greater in scope than local governments alone may resolve. McCook, NE Code of Ordinances, under Chapter 91: Fire Prevention; Fireworks; Poisonous or Flammable Gas; Explosives under § 91.24 Outdoor Fireplaces (I), it states that, “Wind and weather conditions. Outdoor fireplaces shall not be operated when winds are blowing over 20 miles per hour, and wind direction will cause smoke, embers, or other burning materials to be carried by the wind toward any building or other combustible materials. Outdoor fireplaces shall not be operating when weather conditions are extremely dry.” Therefore, all outdoor fireplaces, which include fire pits and portable fire pits, shall be banned until the Executive Order is allowed to expire.
