MCC Women pick up road win over Laramie County 58-52
CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The McCook Community College women picked up a 58-52 win Friday night over Laramie County College.
The Golden Eagles led 13-9 after 10 minutes but MCC responded with a 17-11 edge in the second quarter to lead at intermission 26-24. The Lady Indians stretched the lead to 40-35 after three quarters and led by 10 points with 5:20 remaining in the game and held off the home team down the stretch.
“This was a tough, gut-it-out win for us,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “I am proud of how we played, and how we didn't get rattled in the end.”
The Lady Indians helped their cause making 15 of 17 free throws in the game, shooting 88.2 percent for the game and enjoyed a 15-6 advantage from the line.
Sophomore Madara Liepniece (Riga, Latvia) went eight-for-eight from the line and freshman Carolina Garcia Perdomo (Islas Canarias, Spain) went four-for-four from the line. “Madara made big free throws, Carol hit a big 3 in the fourth when LCCC got to within two points,” said Pritchett. “And Irene and Carol also had big rebounds when we needed them.”
MCC shot 41.7 percent from the field, made three of 14 shots from the 3-point line (21.4 percent) and turned the ball over 14 times.
“Tonight we fixed some things by limiting our turnovers and making free throws,” said Pritchett. “We have to continue those things to be good in our region.”
LCCC shot 33.9 percent from the field, made six of 27 from distance, and went six of seven from the line (85.7 percent).
“Our team defense tonight was really good. We helped, we covered shooters, and we didn't foul,” said Pritchett. “Those are things we have been focusing on the last couple days.”
Laramie County falls to 6-7.
“We'll enjoy the win but have to get ready to play an EWC team that has been playing extremely well lately,” said Pritchett.
MCC improves to 8-3. The Lady Indians will take on Eastern Wyoming (7-6) at Torrington Saturday. The Lancers picked up a 67-59 win Friday over North Platte.
