MCC win in Saturday sweep over SECC

The Lady Indians Volleyball team improved to 5-0 in Region IX with a 3-0 sweep over Southeast Community College Saturday in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
“It was a good weekend overall,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kozba.
MCC won 25-14, 25-9, 25-17 to complete a weekend winning six of seven sets against Region IX South teams. Saturday’s win was also the 200th win for Coach Kobza at MCC.
MCC goes to 12-10 and 5-0 in the region.
The Lady Indians will play the other two unbeaten teams in the south region this week. On Wednesday MCC travels to Scottsbluff for a 7 p.m. match with Western Nebraska (3-0, 12-10). On Friday MCC will be back home to face No. 19 Northeastern Junior College (3-0, 14-6) in a 6 p.m. match at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
“We still have a few areas where we can improve, and I’m hoping we can come in and work on those before Wednesday,” said Kobza. “I think this next week will really show where we are in the south.”
On Saturday, a pair of freshmen fueled the MCC offensive attack with Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) leading the way with 16 kills and four service aces while Jade Powell (Sterling, Colo.) had eight kills, a team-high 16 digs and three service aces.
MCC had 15 service aces on the afternoon with just three service errors. The Lady Indians had 38 kills in three sets and hit .295. The Bobcats hit .022.
Sophomores Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) and Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) both chipped in with five kills each. Young also had a solo block, two service aces and five digs while Muller had two digs and an assist block.
In the midde, Bobbi Starkebaum (sophomore, Haxtun, Colo.) had one solo block, two block assists and two kills.
Freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Pueblo, Colo.) led MCC with 19 assists in the passing game along with five digs while sophomore Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) dished out 10 with three service aces and six digs.
Freshman libero Paula Urizar (Guatemala City, Guatemala) was credited with eight digs.
The Bobcats go to 0-4 in the region and 3-13 for the year.
