MCC Volleyball wins in four over ‘Runnin’ Lopes’

LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team got back in the win column Wednesday night with a 3-1 road win in Region 9 South play. The Lady Indians downed Lamar Community College 25-23, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-19.
 
“We did not play to our fullest potential tonight,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “There are things that we continually work on in practice, and we need to be able to carry that over to our matches.”

Three Lady Indians reached double-digit kills Wednesday night led by freshman Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) who pounded out 14 kills with two assist blocks. Sophomore Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) had 13 kills and three assist blocks. Freshman Maggie Fiene (Murray, Neb.) was credited with 10 kills.

Jade Powell (freshman, Sterling, Colo.) had five kills, seven digs, three assist blocks and three service aces. Sophomore Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) led MCC with five assist blocks and added three kills. Freshman Tanna Bailey (Stoneham, Colo.) had three assist blocks and one kill.
 
“Lamar did a great job blocking and their libero was picking up everything,” said Kobza. “We just need to continue to improve and work on our consistency.”
 
Sophomore Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) fueled the passing game with a team-high 21 assists to go along with five digs and three aces. Freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Pueblo, Colo.) added 17 assists.
 
Freshman Paula Urizar (Guatemala City, Guatemala) had seven digs and two service aces.
 
Going into Wednesday’s match, Lamar was one of three teams tied for fourth place in the Region IX South standings at 3-4. They fall to 3-5 in region play and 5-10 overall.

MCC improves to 6-2 in the Region IX South standings (third among eight teams) and 13-12 overall.

The Lady Indians will travel to Lincoln Saturday for a 2 p.m. match against Southeast Community College (0-8, 4-18). The Bobcats dropped a three-set match Wednesday night at home to North Platte.
 
After Saturday, MCC will be home for four of the final regular-season games starting with a Thursday night home game (Oct. 15) against Otero, a Saturday matinee (noon start) Oct. 17 against Trinidad and an Oct. 20 match with Western Nebraska. The Lady Indians wrap up the regular season Oct. 28 at home against North Platte.
