MCC Volleyball tops North Platte 3-1
“I knew we were going to be in for a long night after that first set went 32-30,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.
MCC got down 12-6 in the second set but fought back to cut the lead to 16-19, but the Knights outscored MCC 6-3 to tie the match at one set each.
The third set was tied at 19-19, 22-22, 23-23 and 24-24 before the Indians were able to take the final two points of the set and took a 2-1 lead.
“That match could have gone either way,” said Kobza. “I would say both teams had some good comebacks and none of us gave up in the fight.”
North Platte scored four of the first five points in the fourth set before MCC came back and went on an 8-1 run to lead 9-5, and later 13-6. With the Lady Indians up 18-14, NPCC scored four straight points to tie the set at 18-18. MCC went up 20-18 and 22-20 before the Knights tied the set at 22-22 and 23-23, beforet MCC scored twice to seal the match.
Freshman Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho), who was coming off a week where she was named Region IX South offensive player of the week award, led the MCC attack Tuesday with 16 kills, three assist blocks, one ace and six digs. Last week she averaged 4.38 kills per set and hit .373.
Sophomore Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) tallied eight kills and one assist block. Freshman Maggie Fiene, (Conestoga High School), was credited with eight kills, five assist blocks and two digs.
Bobbi Starkebaum (sophomore, Haxtun, Colo.) was credited with seven assist blocks, one solo block and three kills. Sophomore Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) had four assist blocks and three kills. Freshman Jade Powell (Sterling, Colo.) had three kills, three assist blocks and nine digs.
Freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Pueblo, Colo.) led MCC in passing with 24 assists to go along with four digs and a service ace. Sophomore Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) had 10 assists and two digs.
North Platte falls to 7-9 and 1-2 in the region.
MCC climbs to 10-10.
The Lady Indians return home Friday for a 6 p.m. match against Lamar (2-7, 0-2) which will be homecoming. On Saturday, the Tribe plays a 1 p.m. matinee against Southeast Community College (3-11, 0-2). Student Life is planning a Hawaiian theme, and all fans are encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts.
