MCC Volleyball sweeps Bobcats

LINCOLN – The McCook Community College volleyball team picked up another conference road win Saturday with a 3-0 sweep over Southeast Community College in Lincoln
The Lady Indians prevailed 25-9, 25-15 and 25-22.
“We played very well the first two sets and our communication was great too,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “We got pretty complacent in our third set and made a few errors.”
After holding the Bobcats to a 24 percent side-out percentage in the first set and 37 percent in the second set, Southeast was able to get a 52 percent side-out percentage in the third set.
MCC hit .353 in the match and held SCC to .021. The Lady Indians had nine ace serves to five for the Bobcats.
MCC freshman Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) led all players with 13 kills. Sophomore Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) followed closely with 12. The Lady Indians outhit Southeast CC 37-17.
Freshmen Jade Powell (Sterling, Colo.) and Tanna Bailey (Stoneham, Colo.) both had five kills each. Powell also had three service aces and seven digs. Bailey led MCC with two solo blocks and had three assist blocks. Freshman Maggie Fiene (Murray, Neb.) had three assist blocks.
Paula Urizar (freshman, Guatemala City, Guatemala) paced MCC defensively with 13 digs.
Sophomore Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) led MCC with 18 assists and added five digs. Freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Pueblo, Colo.) had 13 assists to go along with three aces and four digs.
The Bobcats fall to 0-9 in the Region IX South standings and 4-19 overall.
The Lady Indians up their Region IX South record to 7-2, and stand in third place behind unbeaten Northeastern Junior College and Western Nebraska. MCC improves to 13-12 overall.
“We have a big week next week and need to still work on being consistent in the small areas of the game,” said Kobza.
MCC will be home for four of the final five regular-season games starting with a Thursday night home match against Otero, followed by a noon match on Oct. 17 against Trinidad.
The Lady Indians wrap up the regular season Oct. 28 at home against North Platte.
