MCC Volleyball splits Saturday games

The McCook Community College volleyball team snapped their five-game losing streak with a win in the first game of Saturday play in the MCC Labor Day Weekend Tournament. The Lady Indians swept Northwest College (Wyoming) 3-0 then lost a four-set match in the finale to Iowa Western Community College.

 

“I wanted to make sure today we showed improvement, and I do think we accomplished that goal,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “We made a few little changes, and I think that helped our overall offense and defense.”

 

MCC goes to 7-6 on the season. 

 

“After the whole weekend is over, I still believe everyone knows the culture and goals we have and they want to continue to work on those and I think that’s where we are winning,” said Kobza.

 

The team will head back to Texas next weekend for four games in the Amarillo College Tournament with two games Friday and two more Saturday.

 

The Lady Indians will begin Region IX play with road games at Trinidad, Otero and North Platte before returning home Sept. 25-26 to face Lamar Community College and Southeast Community College.

 

GAME 1 – MCC 3, Northwest College 0: The Lady Indians won 25-12, 25-17 and 25-18.

Freshman Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) led the offense with 12 kills and three assist blocks. Jade Powell (freshman, Sterling, Colo.) had nine kills with one service ace.

 

Sophomores Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) and Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) both had four kills and two assist blocks while Anna Richardson (Worland, Wyo.) had four kills with a solo block.

 

Sophomore Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) led MCC from the service line with six aces and led the team with 28 assists. Kamryn Slaugh (sophomore, Manila Utah) had three aces.

 

GAME 2 – Iowa Western CC 3, MCC 1: The Reivers won 25-18, 25-16, 24-26 and 26-24.

After losing the first two sets, MCC got out to a 4-0 lead and held it until Iowa Western took a 12-11 lead and the two teams remained close until the Lady Indians scored the final two points of the set.

 

In the fourth set, MCC went up 6-3, gave up the lead at 9-9, trailed 9-13 before an 8-4 run tied the set at 17-17. MCC went up 20-18 but after a Reivers time-out, IWCC tied the set at 20, and the teams traded points until MCC led 24-23 but the visitors scored the final three points of the match.

 

Rebohile Phamotse led MCC with 16 kills and added two assist blocks.

 

Bobbi Starkebaum had six kills with four assist blocks and a solo block. Jade Powell was credited with six kills, three assist blocks and two service aces. Leia Young had five kills and led MCC with seven assist blocks.

 

Freshman Maggie Fiene (Murray, Neb.) had five kills with two assist blocks, sophomore Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) had four kills with three assist blocks and Anna Richardson (sophomore, Worland, Wyo.) had one kill.
