MCC Golfers fourth in leadup to districts
GERING, Neb. – After a scheduling change this week, the McCook Community College golf team finished in fourth place at the two-day tournament held at Monument Shadows Golf Course.
Weather concerns cancelled the Central Wyoming tournament scheduled meet this week in Riverton, so coaches put together a two-day tournament at Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering, Neb.
“In very thankful to still get some tournament golf in this week after Central Wyoming cancelled their event due to weather,” said MCC Coach Grant Case.
MCC shot a 326 Wednesday which put them in fourth place, 29 shots back of leader Eastern Wyoming, then posted a 321 Thursday to finish at +71. Eastern Wyoming won with a +18. The Lancers increased their seven-shot lead over Northeastern JC Thursday to win the team title by 11 shots.
“Everyone had a tough time the first day avoiding the big numbers which had a huge impact on our team score,” said Case. “But everyone did a much better job during the second round avoiding those bigger numbers which was good to see but ultimately we made far too many bogeys.”
Freshman Joackym Mahy (Andenne, Belgium) had the best round Wednesday with an 80 then duplicated that Thursday to finish at +16 for the tournament. Freshman, Jeb Kastens (Atwood, Kan.) shot an 81 Wednesday and was one shot better Thursday to finish a shot back of Mahy.
Louis Yin (freshman, Tainan, Taiwan) had back-to-back rounds of 81 to finish at +18. Braiden Portie (freshman, Arvada, Colo.) shot an 87 in the first round and came back to card an 80 Thursday to finish at +23.
Sophomore Cole Graham (McCook) carded an 84 Wednesday and an 86 Thursday (+26). Freshman Jalen Collicott (McCook) had rounds of 89 and 84 to finish at +29.
MCC will play for the West District Championship next week at The Olde Course in Loveland, Colo. The field will include five teams from Region IX Eastern Wyoming, Otero, Central Wyoming, Northeastern JC, MCC, as well as Eastern Arizona from Region 1 and North Idaho College from Region 18.
“We’re looking forward to practice this week, being our last big push before the district tournament next week,” said Case.
