MCC golfers finish fourth at home tournament

The McCook Community College golf team finished fourth in the two-day MCC tournament at Heritage Hills. The Indians shot rounds of 310 and 319 to finish two shots out of third place.

“Day 2 at Heritage Hills was much more challenging with a bit more wind today,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. “A tough course in tough conditions is not a good recipe for a team battling some confidence issues.”

Eastern Wyoming claimed the tournament with rounds of 298 and 300 to finish 10 strokes ahead of Otero Junior College. Central Wyoming was third and MCC fourth, 15 strokes ahead of fifth-place Northeastern Junior College.

Southeast Community College, which was tied for the lead after Thursday, did not compete in Friday’s rounds.

“We couldn't quite get anything going with putters and some penalty strokes led to a higher finish than we were hoping,” said Loop.

Freshman Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) was MCC’s top finisher and ended in a tie for eighth place. He was +10 for the tournament with rounds of 76 and 77. Zachary Woods (freshman, Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) was a shot back of Brown and tied for 11^th place with a two-day score of 154, shooting rounds of 75 and 79.

Freshman Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) was +15 for the two days, posting rounds of 76 and 83 and 159 for the tournament. Matt Grimonprez (Villenuave-d’ascq, France), had rounds of 83 and 81 to finish at 164 and freshman Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nev.) shot an 85 Thursday and an 82 Friday and finished at 167.

“We just need a good tournament with a couple good rounds in a row to light a spark in the team, hopefully that will be next week in Sterling, Colo.,” said Loop.

The Indians will play in the Northeastern Junior College tournament Thursday and Friday.
