Colby snaps MCC’s 11-game winning streak

COLBY, Kan. – The 20th ranked McCook Community College softball team picked up their 11th straight win Thursday but lost the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Colby. The Lady Indians won 12-3 in six innings then lost the second game 6-1.

"We had two pretty good pitching performances today and hit the ball well in Game 1," said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall.

In Game 1, MCC also took advantage of five Colby errors leading to seven unearned runs and 14 free passes as sophomore Paige Warren (Victoria, British Columbia) won her 18th game of the year in the pitching circle.

In Game 2, MCC was held to four hits as the Trojans hit four home runs to send MCC to just their fifth loss of the season.

"They just out played us in Game 2. Their pitcher did a nice job of keeping us off balance," said Mendenhall, "And we also needed to be more disciplined at the plate."

Colby goes to 22-16. The Trojans will come to McCook Monday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

MCC goes to 35-5 (16-4 on the road.) The Indians will be home Sunday to face Fort Hays Tech Northwest in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The Tigers are 1-35 heading into a Saturday doubleheader at home against Dodge City.

GAME 1 – McCook CC 12, Colby 3: Freshman Josie Wright (Calgary, Alberta) singled in the first inning, stole second, and scored on an RBI-single by sophomore transfer Marleigh Mitchell (Mission, British Columbia).

The Lady Trojans took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on an MCC error and a two-run home run.

A Colby error, a walk, and a fielder's choice tied the game 2-2 in the third and MCC took a 3-2 lead on another Colby error. Paige Warren and Wright walked to lead off the fourth and freshman Brooklyn Gillen (McCook) singled in Warren and later Gillen came in on a Colby error to make it 5-2. Colby got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI-single.

Three walks in the top of the fifth set the table for a four-run inning as freshman Lyndsay Keogh (Surrey, British Columbia) drove in a run with a single, one run scored on a passed ball, another scored on an error and Mitchell drove in a run on a fielder's choice to put MCC ahead 9-3.

Sophomore Kashlin Beck (Claflin, Kan.) hit a solo home run (her 11th of the year) leading off the sixth, and after MCC loaded the bases on two walks and a single, a two-run error in the outfield gave MCC a 12-3 cushion.

Warren pitched six innings, allowing five hits, no walks, two earned runs and she struck out five to improve to 18-2 with her 14th complete game.

MCC had six hits with 13 walks and a hit batter. Wright was the only Lady Indian with a two-hit game. Mitchell and Beck both had two RBIs.

GAME 2 – Colby 6, McCook CC 1: Paige Warren hit a solo home run to lead off the game – her seventh homer of the year.

Colby took advantage of aa MCC error in the third and hit a two-run homer to lead 2-1. The Trojans added a run in the fourth on a solo home, then hit a two-run home run followed by a solo shot in the sixth inning.

Freshman Hannah Schneider (Scottsbluff, H.S.) pitched 5.1 innings for MCC, allowing six hits and four earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Olivia Moorhead (Hershey, Neb.) finished out the sixth inning, she allowed one hit, no walks and no strikeouts.

MCC was held to four hits and only one batter walked. Brooklyn Gillen had MCC's only extra-base hit, a double.
