McCook, Neb.—Healthy Heart Initiative, a new program offered by Community Hospital to help educate adults on ways to prevent a possible heart event in their lives begins in January. The program is tailored for attendees who have risk factors for heart disease. A physician referral is required to register. Beginning January 23, it includes six classes every Monday and Thursday, from 6 to 7:30 PM for three weeks at Community Hospital.

The type of person who may be interested in registering includes those who are physically inactive and overweight, have uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol levels. It includes smokers, those who have a poor diet, or use alcohol. All of these factors, including uncontrolled stress and depression, can put a person at a higher risk for heart disease.

Participants meet in a group setting to learn how to modify their lifestyles to reduce risk factors and to prevent a possible heart event in the future. Class topics include:

·         Heart disease risk factors/signs & symptoms of a heart event

·         Diet/label reading/budget friendly healthy eating/cholesterol/weight reduction

·         Diabetes and pre-diabetes and how it affects the body

·         Smoking cessation and oral health

·         Depression/sleep/stress and substance abuse

·         Yoga, stretches, and relaxation

·         Effects of sedentary lifestyle and community fitness options

Molly Herzberg, who completed the pilot class this fall, said the class is very informative and fun. “The staff made everyone feel welcome and they took the time to address all questions. I appreciated that our instructors worked to individualize the class offerings for each participant,” she added.
